Yes it does make sense.  The best value comes from your Sapphire points when you transfer them to one of their airline partners. If you get the Freedom card too you can transfer your Freedom points to the Sapphire account and take advantage of these points which have more value than simply converting them to cash.

Additionally because the Freedom had rotating 5% bonus categories you can earn more by charging items that fall within those categories than you can charging them onto your Sapphire card.

In my opinion the Sapphire & Freedom combo is the best card combo available.  Furthermore since the Freedom card does not carry an annual fee it doesn’t hurt you to carry the card even if it gets minimal usage as it keeps your options open and increases your available credit which will improve your credit score.  Get the Freedom card.
